Well, hello! If you’ve recently bought a Ring doorbell and are now looking at the box thinking, Now what?, then you’ve come to the right place. Ring Doorbell installation isn’t as complicated as it may seem. Really, it’s about as easy as trying to decide between pineapple or no pineapple on a pizza. (For the record, there’s no right answer there. Just strong opinions.)
Step 1: Unbox with Flair
First things first, unbox that beauty! Like the anticipation before unwrapping a Christmas present, take a moment to enjoy the possibilities that lie within that humble cardboard box.
Hopefully, inside, you’ll find the Ring Doorbell (because otherwise, we’ve got bigger issues), a mounting bracket, some screws, and perhaps a tool or two.
Step 2: Pick Your Spot
Deciding where to mount your Ring doorbell is kind of like choosing where to get a tattoo. It’s all about the location. Ideally, you want it at chest height for the average person.
Too high, and you’ll get a great view of the tops of your visitors heads (which might be fun, but not particularly useful). Too low, and you might become overly familiar with their shoe choices. Before making it permanent, perhaps do a walk-by to make sure the camera angle captures the desired view.
If you have an existing doorbell, it will be easiest to remove that doorbell switch and mount it there. (Make sure to turn off the breaker before removing the old switch and wiring up the new. It is low voltage but better to be safe than all tingly inside.)
Step 3: Secure It
Use the included cute little level, position the mounting bracket where you want it and mark the holes with a pencil. Now we drill! If your house is brick or concrete, you’ll want to use the provided wall anchors. If it’s wood or siding, you can screw directly into it.
Step 4: Charge It Up or Connect the Wires (Or Both)
Before mounting, plug your Ring doorbell into a USB charger using the cable provided. A solid green light means we’re good to go. If it’s blinking, well, patience, young grasshopper. Give it some more time.
If you have existing wires for the doorbell, connect them to the two screws on the back of the Ring doorbell.
Once the bracket is snug as a bug and wired or charged up, click your Ring doorbell into the bracket. You’ll know it’s secure when you hear that satisfying ‘click’. Finally, take the included security screw and provided tool and secure the cover.
Step 5: The Fun of Setup
Now, whip out your smartphone and download the Ring app. Once you’ve navigated past the standard “Yes, I agree to the terms and conditions” (which we all read in detail, right?), the app will guide you through the WiFi setup. This is the part where you pray to the WiFi gods that your password works on the first try.
We’ve unboxed, mounted, and clicked our Ring Doorbell into place. But our installation journey isn’t over just yet. So let’s dive back in, shall we? (And no, I won’t judge if you stop to grab a snack for this part.)
Step 6: Ding Dong! Customize your Chime
The default ring might be music to some ears, but maybe you fancy a bit of flair. Dive into the Ring app and explore the world of chime tones. There’s everything from classic bings and bongs to seasonal jingles. Choose wisely – this will be the soundtrack to your front door!
Step 7: Motion Sensitivity – Not Just a Feelings Thing
Your Ring Doorbell is smart, but you’ve got to give it a little guidance. You don’t want a notification every time a leaf flutters. (Or do you? No judgment!) But, you also don’t want to miss out when the neighbor’s cat (or, you know, a burglar) decides to swing by.
Hop into the settings of the Ring app and adjust the motion sensitivity. It’s like setting the sensitivity on your dating profile – too low, and you’ll miss good matches; too high, and you may as well start collecting cats!
Step 8: Video Quality Settings – HD or Not HD?
This ain’t the 90s, anymore! We’re in an age where 4K, HD, and all those other fancy 2 letter acronyms rule. The Ring Doorbell can send you crisp, clear footage of your front door antics. But, higher quality also means more data usage and possibly slower streaming. Adjust video quality in the settings to find that Goldilocks “just right” level.
Step 9: Sharing is Caring
Got roommates? Family members? Maybe a super nosy neighbor who you oddly trust? You can grant shared access to the Ring app, letting others in your household see who’s at the door without handing over your phone every time. But, use this power wisely!
Step 10: Stay Updated
Much like all of our electronic gadgets and gizmos, the Ring Video Doorbell gets occasional updates to improve functionality, security, and performance. Regularly check for updates in the Ring app to ensure you’re getting the most out of your video doorbell.
Step 11: Sit Back, Relax, and Enjoy!
You did it! Give yourself a pat on the back. Your home is now a fortress – or, at the very least, a slightly more monitored space. Keep your phone charged, keep an ear out for your chosen chime, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing who’s at your door, whether it’s the pizza delivery guy or Aunt Marge dropping by unexpectedly.
So, our time here and installation journey has come to an end. But every end is a new beginning – in this case, the start of your life with a spiffy, high tech Ring Doorbell! Thank you for allowing me to guide you through this Ring Doorbell installation.
